Why Adoption Has Grown

Several practical factors explain the expansion of dermatology with telehealth in recent years.

Access is the most direct benefit. Many areas, particularly outside major metropolitan regions, have few dermatologists within a reasonable distance, and telehealth removes that geographic constraint. Speed follows closely behind access. Where a standard appointment might take weeks, a store and forward submission often returns an answer within one to three days, and some services offer same day live video visits for more urgent concerns.

Cost can also be a factor, since some virtual visits are priced lower than an in-person copay, particularly for patients without dermatology specific coverage. Time savings matter as well, given that a virtual visit removes the need to arrange travel, take time away from work, or coordinate childcare. Some patients also find it easier to discuss sensitive conditions, including those affecting the genital area, from a private setting and not a clinical office.

For chronic conditions, more frequent virtual check-ins can support better long term management, because patients are not limited to the cadence of full in-person visits to report changes or request adjustments to treatment.

Given the number of services now offering virtual dermatology care, a few criteria are worth checking before choosing one.

Ongoing developments are likely to extend what teledermatology can reliably do. For concerns such as acne, eczema, rosacea, or a new spot that needs a first opinion, a virtual visit with a qualified provider is often a reasonable and efficient starting point.

Getting the Most Out of a Virtual Visit

Preparation affects the quality of a remote assessment more than many patients expect. Beyond following a platform’s photo guidance, a combination of a wider shot showing surrounding skin and a closer shot showing texture or borders gives a provider more to work with than a single image.

A brief written timeline also helps. Noting when a condition first appeared and whether it has changed or spread gives the reviewing provider a sense of how the condition is behaving over time. Adding what treatments have already been tried and any apparent triggers fills in context that photographs alone cannot convey. Listing current medications and known allergies is equally important, since these can affect which treatments are appropriate.

Patients should treat a virtual visit with the same care as an in-person one, answering intake questions thoroughly, reporting any changes promptly, and accepting a referral to in-person care when a provider recommends it. That last point matters more than it might seem. The value of teledermatology depends on patients following through on referrals rather than treating a remote visit as the final word.
